Dr Ioannis E Alexiou

He has been working mainly in UK, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Ethiopia and Greece, but also various other countries in Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and the Far East. He has a PhD from Newcastle University on Anaerobic Digestion (AD) of industrial wastewaters and he has both research and commercial work experience in the field of treatment and management for industrial and domestic wastes, sludges and wastewaters. He has primarily worked in industrial and business environmental development projects with groups in UK, Europe, East Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Also as an Environmental Engineer he has worked in projects related with various aspects of waste/wastewater management; environmental policies and management systems; environmental impact assessments; corporate social responsibility initiatives; climate change issues, renewable energy and energy efficiency and management; reviewing implications of environmental law in EU and UK; development and implementation of Sustainability and Agenda 21 policies; municipal waste and recycling operations; urban regeneration projects; water/wastewater and environmental training schemes and technology and know-how transfer across various countries.

Since the early 1990’s he has attended as an invited speaker various international conferences in the field of anaerobic digestion and a wider range of water and waste management topics and he has more than 100 presentations and publications, mainly related to the topic of industrial and municipal wastewaters/wastes; sustainable industrial environmental management; and various papers related to energy, resource and waste management. Since February 2010 he has been elected as Chairman of the IWA (International Water Association) Specialist Group on the Treatment of Industrial Wastes and Wastewaters and since 2014 he has been elected as Chairman of the Metropolitan Branch of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).
