President, Independent Power Producers Association of India (IPPAI)
Mr Asok Dasgupta is a very well-known management expert in India and abroad, having spent nearly four decades in Power and Energy related sectors.
After graduating with Honours in Physics from the Calcutta University, Mr Dasgupta joined IIT, Kharagpur in 1959 in Mechanical Engineering. He went to England and was awarded a BSc. Engineering Degree in the Mechanical branch of the London University in 1962. He was awarded A.W.P. (Lond.) for general proficiency in studies leading to a BSc. in Engineering Degree of London University.
On returning to India, he worked with Indian Oxygen Ltd and then Simon Carves India Ltd, till 1970 when he joined CESC (Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation) and worked in various capacities before being elevated as the Chief Executive of CESCON Ltd. Thereafter, he worked additionally as the President of Noida Power Company Ltd. In 1995, Mr Dasgupta joined DLF Power Ltd and was the President of the company.
Mr Dasgupta is closely associated with various professional bodies in India involved in the growth of the Energy Sector. He has chaired various energy related committees in Assocham, CII, etc. He has been a speaker and moderator in various conferences and seminars all over India and also outside the country. He is a visiting professor and advisor in various universities. Currently, he is closely associated with Energy Management Department of Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management.
He is also closely connected with the Materials Management profession and was the National President of the Indian Institute of Materials Management from 1983 to 1985. For his outstanding contribution in the field of materials management in the country, Mr Dasgupta was conferred with the National Award of the Institute of Materials Management in 1987.
At the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Kolkata Branch, IIMM, Mr Dasgupta was awarded ‘Life Time Achievement Award’, the highest award of the branch ever awarded to any member, in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field of materials management over the last four decades.
He is a founder member of the Independent Power Producers Association of India(IPPAI) and is currently, President there.
