Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak

Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak is a humanist and social reformer from India, known for his work on sanitation and weaker sections of society. He is an internationally acclaimed expert on low-cost sanitation and his contributions are widely known in the areas of bio-energy and bio-fertiliser, liquid and solid waste management, poverty alleviation and integrated rehabilitation programme for liberated scavengers.

Dr. Pathak developed a two-pit pour-flush toilet technology also known as the Sulabh Shauchalaya System. This technology has been recommended as one of the Global Best Practices by UN-HABITAT/UNCHS (United Nationas Centre for Human Settlements and recognised and approved by various other national and international agencies such as, WHO, UNICEF, UNEP and WSSCC. The UNDP Human Development Report 2003 has recommended its use especially in developing countries.

Dr. Pathak has also developed a technology for complete recycling and reuse of waste from public toilets where biogas produced through anaerobic digestion is used for cooking, lighting, electricity generation, etc. This biogas plant effluent is treated by a simple method to make it colourless, odourless and pathogen-free, making it safe for reuse or discharge to water bodies.
